LEVEL OF FARMERS' EMPOWERMENT THROUGH THE USE OF BIOLOGICAL AGENTS IN TREATING RICE PEST DISEASES

Abstract

One way to reduce the use of chemical pesticides is to use biological controls that are more environmentally friendly. However, farmers in Jambu Village, Tugu District, in carrying out pest and disease control by utilizing biological agents are still not optimal. It is known that around 90% of farmers still use chemical pesticides. The purpose of this study was to determine the level of empowerment of farmers in the use of biological agents in tackling pests and diseases in rice plants. This research was conducted at the Setya Tani Farmer Group, Jambu Village, Tugu District, Trenggalek Regency starting from February – May 2023. The research method used was a quantitative descriptive method with interview data collection techniques and filling out Likert scale questionnaires. Some indicators of farmer empowerment include: level of awareness and desire to change (power to), level of ability to increase capacity to gain access (power within), level of ability to face obstacles (power over), level of ability to work together and solidarity (power with). The results of the analysis show that the level of farmer empowerment is in the medium category of the total indicators of farmer empowerment. Indicator Power to (90.00%), Power within (80.00%), Power over (76.67%), Power with (80.00%).
