Abstract

Climate change represents a critical global challenge to the sustainability of food systems, primarily through increased droughts, floods, and extreme temperatures that reduce crop productivity. One emerging adaptation strategy is the development of climate-resilient varieties (CRVs). Nevertheless, research on CRVs remains fragmented across commodities and ecosystems, creating the need for a systematic review to synthesize current evidence. This study aimed to examine the effects of CRVs on agricultural productivity, identify agronomic success factors, and assess their contribution to food security. A systematic literature review (SLR) was conducted following the PRISMA 2020 protocol. Relevant articles were retrieved from Scopus, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, and PubMed, screened using strict inclusion and exclusion criteria, evaluated for quality using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT) 2018, and thematically analyzed with NVivo 14. Of 319 articles identified, 30 met the inclusion criteria. Findings show CRVs enhance yields by 10–30% under extreme climate conditions, reduce crop failure risks by up to 30%, and sustain productivity under normal conditions. Key determinants include physiological mechanisms, genetic innovation, land management, and institutional support. CRVs significantly contribute to production stability, farmer income, poverty alleviation, nutrition diversification, and policy resilience, positioning them as a multidimensional innovation for national food security
